Four Ethernet cables are in the Amazon UK Computers top 30 this morning, at #7, #12, #21 and #26. Do you need Cat6 or Cat8, and how long should the cable be?

The short answer: for a home broadband router, games console, smart TV or PC, Cat6 is listed at up to 1 Gbps, which is more than most UK home broadband plans deliver. Cat8 cables are listed at far higher speeds, but you only see the benefit with matching equipment. Measure the route along the skirting board, then add a metre or two.

On the Amazon UK Computers and Accessories chart today: DDMALL Cat8 flat 5 m at #7, Yauhody Cat6 flat at #12, Nixsto Cat6 flat 5 m at #21 and UGREEN Cat8 braided 5 m at #26. This is a practical UK shopping shortlist on amazon.co.uk. It does not invent prices, ratings or claims beyond what the listings state.

Cat6: the everyday choice

Cat8: for faster kit or future proofing

Open the live listing on the day you buy and pick the length there, as many listings bundle several lengths under one page.

Which one?

  • Console or TV next to the router: a 1 to 3 m Cat6
  • Router in the hall, PC upstairs or in another room: a flat 10 to 20 m Cat6 along the skirting
  • Gigabit or faster full fibre with a multi gig router and PC: Cat6a, Cat7 or Cat8 is worth a look
  • Streaming stick with no Ethernet port? Some need an adapter; our Fire TV Stick guide covers the models

Quick checklist

  1. Measure the route, not the straight line, and add a little slack
  2. Choose flat for under carpets and door gaps, round or braided for desks
  3. Check the device has an RJ45 Ethernet port
  4. Keep the cable away from being trapped under doors that close on it
