Two 4 gang extension leads are in the Amazon UK top 30 this morning: DESIRETECH at #7 in DIY and Tools and STATUS at #21 in Electronics. With Christmas lights, trees and longer evenings at the desk ahead, which extension lead do you actually need?

The short answer: a plain 4 gang lead with a 2 metre cable covers most rooms. Pick a surge protected lead for a TV, computer or games console, individual switches if you want to turn things off at the strip, and a cable reel for longer runs in the garage. Every UK lead is still limited to 13 amps through one wall socket, so more sockets do not mean more power.

On the Amazon UK charts today: DESIRETECH 4 gang 2 metre extension lead at #7 in DIY and Tools, and STATUS 4 way 1 metre extension lead at #21 in Electronics. This is a practical UK shopping shortlist on amazon.co.uk. It does not invent prices, ratings or claims beyond what the listings state.

Standard 4 gang leads

Surge protected and switched

Longer reach: a cable reel

Open the live listing on the day you buy, as cable lengths and colours sit under separate listings.

Which one for which job?

  • Bedside or desk chargers and a lamp: a 1 metre 4 gang lead
  • TV, router and games console: a surge protected lead
  • Christmas tree lights and a few decorations: a 2 metre 4 gang lead, kept where it will not be tripped over
  • Garage, loft or shed jobs: a cable reel, fully unwound before use

Safety basics

  1. Keep the total load under 13 amps; do not run a heater, kettle or iron on the same lead as other high power appliances
  2. Never plug one extension lead into another
  3. Unwind cable reels fully, as a wound reel can overheat under load
  4. Indoor leads stay indoors; use leads made for outdoor use outside
  5. Replace any lead with a cracked case, scorch marks or a damaged cable; Electrical Safety First, the UK charity, has more guidance at electricalsafetyfirst.org.uk
