Rugby, hockey and boxing are in full swing, and plenty of schools and clubs will not let players on without a gum shield. Which sports mouthguard should you buy on amazon.co.uk for an adult or a child?
The short answer: a boil and bite style guard from a known brand suits most players, in the right size for their age. If they wear fixed braces, choose a braces version or ask your dentist, because several popular guards say they are not suitable for braces.

Four mouthguards are in the Amazon UK Sports bestseller list this week, two of them new entries. This is a practical UK shopping shortlist on amazon.co.uk. It does not invent prices or protection ratings, and it is not dental advice.
The charting mouthguards
- OPRO Silver Level sports mouthguard, adult and kids sizes, made in the UK per the listing; it uses a fitting tray and says it is not suitable for fixed braces
- OPRO Gold Level sports mouthguard, the brand’s premium fit step up; the listing notes braces versions are available separately
- SAFEJAWZ slim fit gum shield with case, adult and junior sizes, and the listing says you can repeat the fitting process
- Game Guard boil and bite gum shield, junior (age 8+) and senior (13+) sizes in lots of colours, and it can be trimmed
- braces mouthguard search on amazon.co.uk for players with fixed braces

Getting the size and fit right
Most of these guards are moulded at home. You soften the guard in hot water, then bite into it (or use the supplied fitting tray) so it takes the shape of the teeth. Follow the instructions in the box exactly, as each brand’s method is different.
- Size by age as the listing suggests: Game Guard gives junior for 8+ and senior for 13+
- Check braces suitability: OPRO Silver says it is not for fixed braces, and the SAFEJAWZ listing says its Intro guard is not for braces and points brace wearers to its Ortho range
- A good fit should stay in place without biting down; if it falls out, refit or try another size
- Game Guard’s listing suggests changing guards every season or term
School and club rules
Many schools and clubs run a no gum shield, no play policy for contact sports. Check whether your club asks for a particular colour or type, and pack a spare in the kit bag, since guards are easy to lose.
